TD Conversions Adapter Kit – Toyota 3.4L (5VZ-FE) to VW/Audi 1.8T & 2.0T Turbo Engines
This TD Conversions kit allows you to connect any transmission originally mated to a Toyota 3.4L (5VZ-FE) engine to a Volkswagen/Audi 1.8T or 2.0T 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine (model years 2001–2014; newer engines may also be compatible).
The adapter replicates the rear profile of the Toyota engine, making the VW/Audi engine appear identical in shape and bolt pattern to the 5VZ-FE it replaces. This means you can directly bolt your Toyota 5VZ-FE transmission to your VW/Audi engine with no major modifications.
***If you are using a R150/R151 transmission, the 3.0L and 3.4L transmissions have different length input shafts. Therefore, you can only use a 3.4L bellhousing on a R150/R151 series trans box from a 3.4L. Same goes for the 3.0L, you can only use a 3.0L bellhousing on a R150/R151 series trans box from a 3.0L. You can not mix and match bellhousings. This is not an issue for most people, just something to be aware of if you buy your bellhousing and trans box separately.***
The 1.8L turbo was available in these vehicles:
-Jetta, Golf, Beetle (2001-2006, MK4)
-Passat (2001-2005)
-Audi A4 (1999-2005 B5, B6)
-TT (1998-2006 MK1)
The 2.0L turbo was available in these vehicles:
-Jetta, Golf (2006-2014, Mk5 MK6)
-Passat (2007-2014)
-Audi A3, A4, TT, Tiguan (2006-2014)
All VW/Audi 4 cylinder engines have the same bellhousing bolt pattern and crank hub. This means you can install any 4 cylinder gas or diesel engine made by VW/Audi using this kit.
Product Features
Our kits are engineered with quality, durability, and performance in mind, offering features that set us apart from the competition.
Premium Billet Aluminum Adapter Plates
We don’t cut corners. Our adapter plates are CNC-machined from high-grade 6061 billet aluminum, not the cheap cast or non-tempered materials often used in lower-cost kits.
Each billet is heat-treated and artificially aged to create the perfect balance of strength and toughness, ensuring long-term reliability even under demanding conditions.
Extra Firewall Clearance
Our 2-inch thick adapter moves the engine forward by 2 inches from the transmission bellhousing. This added space creates valuable firewall clearance and better working room—especially important for tight engine bays. In most vehicles, the transmission remains in its stock location, which means the shifter stays in the factory position—a huge plus for ease of installation and OEM feel.
High-Performance Crank Adapter
Built for serious torque and reliability, our crank adapters are machined from nitride case-hardened alloy steel and rated to withstand up to 800 ft-lbs of torque. The nitriding process is a low-temperature, low-distortion heat treatment that dramatically improves fatigue strength—essential for parts that endure constant stress cycles.
We don’t compromise on materials or design—and we don’t think you should, either. Unlike competitor kits that use aluminum or untreated steel crank adapters, ours are engineered to be the strongest link, not the weakest. Sure, cheaper adapters may “get the wheels turning,” but when it comes to long-term performance and durability—there’s simply no comparison.
2.0kW High-Torque Starter Motor
While most competitor kits include a smaller 1.4kW starter, we’ve stepped up the game by including a PowerMaster 2.0kW high-torque Chevy V8 starter. This upgrade delivers more reliable cranking power, especially in high-compression or cold-start conditions.
The starter also offers two clocking positions, allowing you to fine-tune placement for optimal clearance in your engine bay.
Multiple Engine Clocking Positions
Our dual-plate adapter system provides three engine clocking options: 0° (vertical), 10°, and 15°. This lets you dial in engine angle for improved clearance without moving the transmission.
The transmission stays fixed in its factory position, while the engine can be rotated slightly toward the passenger-side frame rail—a major advantage in tight-fit swaps.

HOW DOES THE ADAPTER WORK?
Our adapters make the back of the VW engine physically resemble the back of the original engine it is replacing. No drilling or welding required, no custom flywheels, or shorted input shafts. Any transmission that originally bolted to your engine will work with this adapter kit.
WHY ARE THERE TWO ADAPTER PLATES?
Our two plate system allows you to clock/rotate the engine while keeping the transmission in the stock orientation. There are three different clocking positions: 0 degrees, 10 degrees, or 15 degrees.
DO I NEED A FLYWHEEL OR FLEXPLATE?
Our VW adapter kits utilize the original flywheel or flexplate from the original engine being replaced. You will not need the VW flywheel, clutch, torque converter, or starter motor.
HOW ACCURATE IS THE TRANSMISSION ALIGNMENT?
We use our Aerospace Grade CMM to pull all the dimensions off the original engine. It allows us to precisely reverse engineer the bolt pattern down to 0.0001". Incorrect alignment will cause premature failure of the pilot and input shaft bearings, excessive clutch plate wear, and internal gear binding.
DOES TDCONVERSIONS DO CONVERSIONS ON CUSTOMER VEHICLES?
-Not currently. We sell the conversion kits to get your engine into the vehicle and bolted to the transmission.
DO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS WORK FOR CONVERSIONS?
-Yes an automatic transmission will work with our adapter kits.
-You will need a standalone TCM controller for your specific transmission. These controllers are highly tunable and have manual shift modes.
